Owen McElhatton didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year. He didn’t expect that he would play football at college until before his senior year, and didn’t even know if he wanted to attend college for some of his high school years. But playing football at ETHS changed all of this, and it was a place where McElhatton felt at home.
“[My favorite part about football] is the brotherhood that you make, especially playing on the O-Line with the guys. You got one task, and you get really close with them, and you’re always working with them and hanging out after,” said McElhatton. “It’s a nice community.”
After only playing football for a few years, the offensive lineman started looking into colleges where he could bring his talent. And that’s when he found Depauw University.
“I really like the football team and the program, and the coaches,” explained McElhatton. “At the beginning, when I was looking for colleges, I was focusing too much on just football and not the school. And then I realized halfway through that I should be focusing on the school too.”
And Depauw was that perfect balance for him. It had a football program he wanted to be a part of, but it was also a great school in many other aspects. And he won’t be the only football player attending Depauw from ETHS. His teammate Ryan Wambo will also be playing with him.
“I’m super excited. It’s a nice way to transition, knowing that I have somebody there from my team, and that we can go through it together. I think it’s definitely a good thing,” said McElhatton.
