Ever since he was young, Johnny Hunwick has wanted to play sports in college. Although it wasn’t always soccer that he was in love with, it was in soccer that he eventually found his path. He will be taking his talents to Division III Kenyon College next year.
“The environment of the people there, the attitude they had made me see that they were a very serious soccer team, but they also have great academics so it was a perfect fit for me,” said Hunwick.
When you get to such a high level of sport, your coaches are a crucial part of your life, perhaps even like another set of parents.
“My club coaches (Kevin Francis) have really helped me through my entire career, and helped me get to where I am today,” stated Hunwick.
While the exciting atmosphere of high school soccer certainly provides lots of memories, one in particular stood out for Hunwick.
“Beating New Trier in the conference finals is probably one of my greatest ETHS, and soccer, memories,” he said. “Beating New Trier always feels good but having it be in the conference finals gave it that extra kick that you wouldn’t get in a regular game.”
Even though the soccer team didn’t go as far as they would have liked, having your last win be against New Trier in the conference championship is an amazing way to end your high school career, and will carry Hunwick into his college career.
