Girls soccer dominates Payton for fifth-straight victory

Evanston posts six first-half goals in its fourth shutout of the season

In another explosive display of offensive prowess, the Kits took eight goals—while allowing none—to come out on top against Walter Payton College Prep (2-5) on Wednesday night. While facing sheets of freezing rain, Evanston (5-0) kept the ball in Grizzly territory to secure its fourth shutout of the season.

The team’s first goal of the night came off the foot of sophomore defender Damilola Adeniyi, who rushed from behind to sink a shot past the Grizzly keeper. Just a minute later, senior midfielder Sydney Ross followed up a deflected shot by freshman forward Alexandra Merriam to put the Kits up 2-0.

A goal from senior forward Jocelyn Leigh, penalty kick by sophomore forward Bridget Durkin and goals from Merriam and junior forward Corin Viamille rounded out the six-score first half for Evanston. Kits finished the decisive victory with goals from Durkin and sophomore midfielder Mia Darer in the second.

Offensive dominance kept Evanston ahead the entire match, with the back line facing little-to-no challenge from the Grizzlies. Keeper Shea Lucas has only allowed one goal in the first five games of the season, during March 21’s bout against Highland Park—a 3-1 Kits victory).

The Kits still have yet to face a conference opponent, a challenge they will encounter during April 16’s matchup with Maine South. Before then, the team takes on Libertyville at home on April 6, Naperville North on April 8,and St. Francis back at Lazier on April 10.
