Lester Low was on his last hole; his heart was pounding so loud he could hear it. His hands were shaking. He takes a deep breath to center himself.
“I’ve done this 1000 times,” Low confidently tells himself. “Do it one more time.”
Low finished his final hole with a par. His score was 65 on the first day and 72 on the second, and a total of 137 for the whole tournament, which placed him in first place. He won first place by one stroke over Issac Rumler from Moline High School, who finished with a score of 138 (66/72).
Low had an amazing season. He was ranked 2nd in the state as an individual, so he went into the State Championship with high expectations.
“I’ve been playing great all season, I had the expectation to win and I pulled it off,” Low said.
The boys’ team walked into State off of a good season and with very high chances of placing.
The Wildkits finished in a tie with rival New Trier for first place, but due to a tiebreaker, the Kits ended up placing second. This feels like deja vu for the Evanston boys’ golf team since they also tied for first last year and finished second due to a tiebreaker.
The team’s score was 589. Lester Low with a 137, Luciano Giangrossi with a 146, Kieran Low with a 152, and Henry Schmidt with a 156. Also playing for Evanston were Henry Way, Miles Gomberg, Nick Bonaguro.
Next year, the golf team will have 4 out of 7 of its players who competed at state returning. A big loss for the team is Lester Low’s brother, Kieran Low, who will be playing at Boston College in the fall.
The Boys Golf Team had an amazing season. They placed 2nd at Regionals and Sectionals and placed 1st at the Central Suburban League Boys Golf Championship. Low is the first Kit to place 1st in the State, making school history.
