Willard Elementary School is dedicated to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment through community events and initiatives that promote both learning and peace. The school has an average enrollment of 353 students, with a diverse student body comprising approximately 59% White students, 25.5% Hispanic students and 15.5% Black students.
Willard offers Two-Way Immersion (TWI), giving students the opportunity to learn English and Spanish in the same classroom. TWI remains important through middle and high school, as it allows students to advance to higher levels of Spanish and eventually earn the Spanish fluency seal upon graduation.
“I enjoyed staying with the same kids for all six years,” said former student Nigel Lopez.
In addition to its educational programs, Willard emphasizes the four peace pillars–Speak Peace, Feel Peace, Make Peace, Know Peace–to promote thoughtfulness and respect among students and teachers.
“Willard celebrates all students and encourages them to promote peace,” said Shelley Bonner, an ETHS math teacher and parent to a Willard student. “They even have peace rallies.”
Willard’s campus features two playgrounds, a gym and a multipurpose room used for lunch and after-school events. The multipurpose room also hosts Hispanic Heritage Night, an evening of dinner and dance celebrating Hispanic culture.
“I remember eating Hispanic food, and there were music and crafts,” said Walter Wen, a former student. “We had tamales.”
Several members of the Willard staff have received teaching awards, such as the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Kindergarten teacher Meghan Rice and music teacher Arturo Fuerte are recipients.
Willard is committed to helping students reach their full potential, embodied in the school’s motto: “Strive For Success and Nothing Less.”
