Thirty-five years ago, Karilyn Joyce was just starting her first year as a gym teacher at ETHS. Joyce’s connection to the school runs deep through generations of her family.
“My grandparents, my parents, my brother and my own kids all went here,” said Joyce. “I was even lucky enough to teach with my daughter for seven years in the same department,” said Joyce.
Joyce’s favorite physical education unit is swimming because she loves seeing her students progress.
“Take a student who can’t swim, can’t float and is afraid to put their face in the water, and by the end of the four weeks, they are swimming across the little pool,” said Joyce. “Their excitement is the best feeling,” said Joyce.
Joyce has built strong relationships with students, alumni and coworkers, and she knows it will be difficult to say goodbye to everyone she has encountered during her time.
One of her many accomplishments would be dedicating 30 years to coaching golf and 34 years to badminton, leaving a lasting mark on athletics.
Joyce’s leadership and commitment were further recognized when she received a nomination for IHSA Badminton Coach of the Year.
“That was an unbelievable experience,” said Joyce.
As she prepares for retirement, Joyce reflects on the many lessons she has learned throughout her career, urging new educators to take care of themselves.
“You do you, and don’t worry about other people and what they do,” said Joyce. “Don’t open emails after four and on weekends; it only ruins your day,” said Joyce.
Joyce plans to relax and take vacations with friends and family once she retires. She values the authentic connections she has formed with her students and will always cherish her time at ETHS.
“I will forever bleed orange and blue,” said Joyce.

Ms. Joyce was one of the most shining beacons of faculty influence on my life at ETHS. She was such an incredible mentor and inspiration during my time on the golf team from ’97-’00. Congratulations on your retirement! You have impacted so many lives in your career!
