This summer, hundreds of ETHS students took on a variety of jobs. Regardless of the position, many gained both valuable experience and a source of income.
Teddy Woodward, a junior who lifeguarded for her second year at the Evanston Golf Club this summer, appreciates the many perks a summer job has to offer.
“Working during the summer allows me to make money, which helps set me up for the school year,” said Woodward. “I also get to work outside, which is nice, especially in the warmer months.”
For most students, summer is the only time of year they work. Receiving a paycheck can be important not only for spending, but also for saving.
“I mainly save the money I make for college, but I always set some aside for clothes and other purchases,” said Woodward.
While some students may worry that a summer job will be too time-consuming, many employers understand this and offer flexible schedules.
“Our lifeguarding shifts aren’t too long, so I can fit in swim practices and social time outside of work,” said Woodward.
Many ETHS students found employment through the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program (MSYEP). The program offers children aged 14-18 with workforce opportunities through community-based organizations, city government departments, and private businesses for up to nine weeks at a time.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with different professional programs in Evanston,” said King.
This past spring, MSYEP supervisor Gregory King collaborated with ETHS to host a job fair for students. Students were able to explore a range of summer job opportunities at the fair.
“My goal for the program is to expose young people to what it’s like to be in the workforce,” said King.
In addition to providing enriching work experience, the MSYEP aims to offer participants more than just a job.
“[My favorite part of the job is] seeing young people excited to go to work,” said King.
That simple excitement, King says, is a sign that programs like the MSYEP are doing exactly what they’re meant to do – helping students build pride, purpose, and a strong foundation for the future.
