Nearly three years ago, three freshman girls sat behind their computer screens in their online Intro to Journalism class. Now, the three girls will unite again as accomplished seniors next year to lead the 107th Evanstonian staff. The Evanstonian’s outgoing Editorial Board is pleased to announce Jilian Denlow, Clara Gustafson and Sophia Sherman as the 2023-2024 Executive Editors.

“I’m excited to be in charge of leading a group of people that came from all different backgrounds and feeling like I have a sense of agency to help everyone else tell stories that they’re hoping to tell,” Denlow said.

Denlow, Gustafson and Sherman have all been involved with the Evanstonian for all three years of their high school experience, and this past year, as section editors, they oversaw Feature, News and Opinion respectively. Through their time as leaders, the trio has established a collaborative leadership style that embraces camaraderie.

“[The Evanstonian] is a family—it’s kind of like a team. [Although] it’s not a sport, we all work together and help each other out, and [we] can bounce ideas off each other and pick up each other’s slack,” Gustafson said.

Next year, they’re looking forward to, not only effectively reporting, but also building community across the staff.

“[I hope] to foster a really supportive community that people feel welcomed into,” Sherman added. “I know that being on The Evanstonian has been a really great experience for me, and [I’m looking forward to] extending that experience out to more students.”
