On January 12, Evanston Girls Basketball finished their homestand by winning emphatically against Lane Tech 70-54 to improve to 8-6 on the season. This win was spearheaded by incredible performances by junior Payton King and sophomore Charity Bryant, who combined for 50 of the Kits’ 70 points.
“They (King and Bryant) were great. I thought they worked really well off each other,” remarked Evanston Head Coach Brittany Johnson
The game started very physical. Both teams played excellent defense, keeping the score at just 10 points apiece at the end of the first quarter. However, Lane Tech racked up fouls, and in the second quarter, the Kits broke through, going on a 14-0 run to put the score at 27-13 with two minutes left in the half.
“It’s obviously impressive to score 14 points in a row, but it’s even more impressive to hold a team scoreless during that run,” stated Johnson
From that point, there was no return for Lane Tech. Evanston continued to pile on the pressure with incredible team defense, with 16 team steals. This defense also led to many transition buckets on offense. This was especially true for Payton King, who pulled in nine boards, dished four assists, secured five steals, and got many of her points out of transition.
“Building off my teammates and being aggressive on the defensive end really helped me get going on offense,” reflected King
The Kits will hope to build off this momentum in their next conference clash at Deerfield on Friday. Their next home game will be a tough matchup on Tuesday, the 20th, against the AP number three team in the state, Loyola Academy.
