The Boys Lacrosse team is entering spring with high hopes for the season, with strong classes following the small but devoted group of seniors. The team is under new leadership, Head Coach Austin Curtis, who was previously the assistant varsity coach, and captains Owen Maman and Emmett Ball.
“My focus doesn’t change. I want this to be a meaningful experience for our players. I want them to leave this program as better lacrosse players and better people.” Curtis shared, “That isn’t always ‘fun’ at the moment, but it’s incredibly rewarding for the players who fully buy in.”
Spring sports start early March, yet the team has been active since the fall, hosting open gyms, team lifts, and runs. Boys lacrosse prioritized the early start to preseason activities, with the hope of rebuilding after graduating some key seniors last season. Maman noted the open gyms were the most successful compared to recent years, emphasizing the importance of off-season activities to be prepared for their big home opener against highly ranked Lake Forest.
“Last year, I think defense came in super strong, and then we kind of collapsed because everyone tries to fear Lake Forest, the number one team.” Mentioned Maman. “But this year, we’ve been focusing on it, probably since the first open gym. We’re coming into this game knowing we can’t be scared and have got to come in strong.”
Ball discussed the team’s significant improvement in culture, work ethic, and punctuality over the 2024-2025 season and hopes to grow further in these areas as a team. The team’s goals for the season consist of a desire to win more conference games, such as Deerfield, Glenbrook North, and Maine South.
“We want to win more games in our conference because we had a lot of close games last year that we lost. Beating Deerfield is a big goal, and I have never beaten them,” Ball expressed. “The program hasn’t lost to them in about 30 years, besides the past two years.”
The Kits kick off their first match hosting Lake Forest on March 17th.
