Last season for Boys Basketball was nothing short of phenomenal. They went down to State for the first time since 2019 and came away with a third-place trophy by beating Rich Township 73-70, after losing to the eventual champion Benet Academy 56-47 in the final four. The Kits hope to ride that momentum into this season.
“We’re really looking for the guys that were on the team last year to carry those lessons over and understand what wins and what loses,” stated head coach Mike Ellis.
The first hurdle the Kits will face is that they have only one returning starter, Vito Rocca, with the other four graduating. The team looks for some of the returning players to take the next step and earn a starting spot for their team.
“We’re gonna have to rely on guys to be productive right away in bigger roles,” Ellis expressed, “I think we’ve got a great mix of players that care about the right things.”
Over the summer and fall, the team made every effort to prepare for their upcoming season, utilizing open gyms, strength training, and conditioning sessions.
A major factor in their recent success was the players’ attitudes and focus on winning.
“When you can coach X’s and O’s and you don’t have to coach attitude and effort, then you can really make some strides.” Stated Ellis.
Ellis and the coaching staff hope to see that mentality translate over into this year to hopefully help continue the team’s success.
The coaching staff hopes to see sophomore Ben Ojala’s progress and reach his full potential, as he is no longer a freshman and has gained experience.
Four seniors – Tristen Wilcox, Miles Ross, Elliot Pratt, and Timi Ogunsanya are all returning players to look out for and are possible starters. After making a big impact last season, they’re ready to take on larger roles and lead the team as the veteran group. Juniors Dion Lane and Tate Schroeder will also take up a big role this year on varsity.
When asked about the senior leaders of the team, Coach Ellis proclaimed, “They know what it takes, and now it’s up to them to create their own legacy.”
