The girls’ cross-country team is facing big changes this season. Last year, seniors made up more than half the team. Now, the team is counting on the underclassmen to step up.
“We have a lot of underclassmen helping us out this year,” said senior Eliza Hogan. “We were scared the team was going to shrink because of how many people graduated, but we’ve had a great turnout so far.”
To prepare for this big season, the team has been putting in hard work all summer, including new strength workouts introduced by Coach Beth Arey.
“We run together every weekday at 6:15 in the morning during the summer. During these practices, our coach (Arey) has given us new strength exercises to help our legs and core. These have been very beneficial to us and will help a lot during the season,” stated Hogan.
Last season, the girls’ team finished third in the conference championship meet. This fall, they aspire to take the title..
“Coach Arey always wants to win the conference, that’s her main thing every year. We think we have a great chance this season as we have very talented runners returning, and joining this year,” marked Eliza.
In addition to winning the conference, the squad’s goals are for the varsity team to qualify for the state championship meet, while having individual growth on the team.
“We hope everyone can improve their best times and become a stronger runner. As long as everyone progresses and stays healthy, we consider that a successful season,” explained Hogan.
One of the top runners on the team this year is Senior Rory Malia. She has qualified for the state championship meet two times already and is looking to make it three. Despite the loss of many seniors, the team remains balanced throughout grad levels.
“Seeing all of the seniors leave was pretty sad and a little scary, but thankfully, we’ve had a strong group of new members join this season,” stated Hogan.
No matter the challenges ahead, the girls’ cross-country team is looking forward to a great upcoming season.
