This year, ETHS students have access to a new semester-long class: Home Repair and Maintenance. This course teaches various life skills, such as plumbing, electricity and carpentry.
“The goal for class is to be comfortable tackling things on your own, as well as to understand how the systems of your house work so you can feel empowered when calling someone to help you in your home,” said teacher Jonathan Lawrence.
In the class, students learn about applying drywall, sanding, painting and fixing holes. The curriculum also goes over simple electrical wiring for homes and plumbing as well as teaching how toilets, faucets and pipes work. Students in the Home Repair and Maintenance class work together throughout the semester to build a wall complete with electrical work and plumbing.
“After having no experience, I feel like I could definitely apply what I’ve learned so far in my future life,” said Titus Lee, a student currently enrolled in the course.
Home Repair and Maintenance covers a wide range of practical skills while helping students explore their interests and uncover potential passions. Rather than training students to go directly into the workforce, the course offers basic knowledge that can guide future study and career choices.
“You can save money when you’re older because you will learn to identify a problem and not have to call a specialist to come over to your house to fix it,” said Lawrence.
Many students have praised Lawrence as an extremely knowledgeable and passionate educator.
“Mr. Lawrence is really good at teaching and very funny and nice,” said Lee. “I’m glad I have him as my teacher.”
While this class currently has only one section, students have referred to it as a hidden gem.
“I would definitely recommend it,” Lee said. “All the skills that are taught are important to have.”
