Located behind the Hilton Garden Inn on 1800 Maple Avenue, the Evanston Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday until Nov. 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. With over 60 vendors, market patrons experience a diverse array of goods.
“The market does a great job at including many options for all customers,” said Evanston resident Catharina Wientjes. “I would encourage anyone who can to attend.”
Many farmers at the market are committed to the Evanston market.
“Some [vendors] are local to Evanston, some to Chicagoland and some come from up to four hours away,” said Katherine Horwitz Martinez, manager of the market.
Held weekly, this market functions as a community space that draws regular visitors. The Evanston staple recently celebrated its 50th anniversary since opening in 1975. In addition to food and handmade items, it often features live music, arts and crafts activities, product samples and raffle entries.
“My goal is to make the market a community hub so that the next generation of shoppers value and enjoy supporting our local producers,” said Martinez.
To continue this tradition for another 50 years, Martinez has goals to further enhance the space for gatherings. She is passionate about the ties that the market has to the community and the “next generation of market patrons.”
Martinez is also passionate about including every part of Evanston in the market.
“I’m always looking for new ways to get our community, including high school and college students, involved at the market,” said Martinez.
She calls for musicians, performers, artists, clubs and anyone who wants to be involved to reach out and be part of the action.
