After failing to beat number one ranked Glenbrook South all year, the Wildkits went into GBS territory and claimed gold in the sectional final last Saturday.

“By the first break we had qualified all of our state swimmers and were leading the meet by 24 points. It was one of my favorite meets of the year,“ said Senior captain Ryan Knohl.

Even though the Kits are ranked eleventh in state, they surely shocked the Titans and the rest of Illinois by winning the sectional meet with 302 points, 18 higher than GBS.

“We’re going for a trophy at state, a top three finish,” said GBS senior swimmer Jon Salomon. The University of Wisconsin commit will rematch the Lafont-Mueller twins in the 50 free today in Winnetka.

The highlights of Evanston’s underdog victory were winning two of the three relays. The third they only lost by one-hundredth of a second.

After this accomplishment, New Trier will most definitely need to bring their A-game after Evanston’s performance.

“I know Evanston swam really well at their sectional, so basically, what I was thinking was that we go with everything we’ve got to beat them.” Said New Trier senior captain and Princeton commit, Murphy McQuet.

“All I was thinking was touching the wall. As soon as I touched the wall, I didn’t know if I made it. When I looked up, I was under state cut time. Best moment of my life.” Said Junior Zach Grossman-Torres after making the cut by three-hundredths of a second.

Evanston will be headed to state today with the best team they have had since the 2005 state champion team and hopes to bring back hardware to the “E”.
