Students to show artwork at YEA festival

To show off local Evanston student artwork, the Young Evanston Artists foundation (YEA) will be putting on an art show May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the corner of Dempster and Chicago.
“There are around 50-80 ETHS students who have their artwork in YEA this year,” said Marla Seibold, art teacher. “Although many people think that YEA is only for elementary and middle school students, there is also a large high school presence.”
ETHS has been a part of the YEA program and art festival since it started 27 years ago. Since then, Evanston has showcased all types of student artwork at the event, including 2D and 3D pieces.
“For some high school art students, YEA is a great culmination of their many years in school and to show all the hard work they are proud of,” said Seibold.
Seibold added that our presence in YEA is a great way to excite younger artists. “Many students talk about seeing the high school art work,” she said. “When they are younger and can’t wait till they are able to take the art classes when they get here.”
ETHS artwork will be displayed on Chicago, south of Dempster. They will also have students outside of the Pottery Shop creating ceramics.
“YEA is about the Evanston community getting together to celebrate all of the young artists, visual and performing,” explained Seibold. “It’s a non-competitive exhibition featuring all of the schools in Evanston and one of the first events of the summer season, a great activity for people of all ages.”
“I like the fair because it’s a fun chance to chill, hang out with friends, and look back on student accomplishments from the year,” said Sam Brewer, junior.
“I think YEA is a very integral part of our community because it brings people together around art and our students,” added John Hruska, junior. “Because of what it does for all of our artists and for the community as a whole, it’s a great community event.”
“Everybody should come out and show their support,” said Seibold. “Not just for the high school students but for the younger students as well. It’s a great event that everyone can enjoy.”
