The boys’ wrestling team is heading into the 2025-26 season ready to build off the success they had last winter. With a strong returning class, including a state qualifier, and ending fifth in the league tournaments, the Kits are expecting a strong showing this season.
“I expect us to be extremely competitive as a team. We’ve got young sophomores and juniors, even some sprinklings of seniors in the lineup,” said Head Coach Rudy Salinas. “We have a returning state qualifier, Jeremy Marshall, and three national team members that we get to show off as well.”
Senior Jeremy Marshall is approaching his second year as the team captain for boys’ Wrestling.
“We’ve always had a big freshman team, double the size of a 14-person lineup, and our varsity team is triple that,” explains Salinas.
In the month leading up to the season, open gyms have been offered to the athletes or anyone else interested in learning more about the sport and what the conditions resemble for a wrestler. Thus becoming a precursor for the season ahead.
“I believe the off-season helps new wrestlers when it comes to making connections in this community,” said Senior Zach Weston. “It allows them to get to know the room and the commitment, as well as getting to know the coaches.”
Weston is entering his third season as a varsity wrestler and feels strongly about the impact that open gyms have had on new athletes, helping them overcome their nerves about joining a team so competitive.
“A challenge we have faced in the past is with new athletes almost feeling scared or stressed out, partially due to them not knowing how to act, which ultimately results in them not competing,” recalls Weston. “What we could work on, as a team, would be to focus on building a community that really supports one another. When you’re on the mat alone, the support you hear around you can affect the decisions you make on the mat.”
With their first quad meet on November 25th, the boys are eager to see how this season will unfold.
