Despite a stunning loss to Lane Tech in the sectional semi-finals, the ETHS boys’ soccer team had an otherwise very successful season. The Kits finished the regular season with a 17-2-3 record and a CSL title, clinching the crown after a 1-0 win against defending state champions and long-time rivals New Trier.
“Last season was super fun. We were super consistent in our performances and had a lot of memorable wins,” recalled senior Lukas Fox.
Much of the Kits’ success came from a dynamic attacking trio. Class of 2025 standouts Joseph Sargent, Cristiano Hamer, and Johnny Hunwick combined for 34 of the team’s 49 goals, with each averaging more than a goal per game. Sargent and Hunwick will continue their soccer careers at North Central and Kenyon colleges, respectively.
“We had a star-studded forward line last year, and all of those players have since graduated, so that is an area that we will need to work on if we are to come close to the success we achieved last year,” noted Fox.
To fill the void up front, senior Nick Dugo, as well as rising juniors James Nicolaou and Noah Thomas, are expected to step up in the upcoming season. With 18 of last year’s 24-man squad now gone, it will be up to the six returning varsity players to take on key leadership roles.
“There is a lot of pressure on us [the returning seniors] to be good role models both off and on the pitch,” said Fox. “It is also our responsibility to help the new players adjust to the varsity level as quickly as possible.”
With a less experienced squad, there is less pressure for immediate playoff success than in recent seasons.
“The expectations are always high here at ETHS, but most of our goals revolve around building a good foundation and team chemistry,” explained Fox.
The Kits’ season kicks off with a tournament match against Mather on September 2nd.
