“It’s a bittersweet feeling—I think bittersweet describes it pretty well,” said a reflective Ryan Wambo thinking about his time at Evanston Township High School.
“I’m not really sad to leave the workload and the schoolwork, but I’m sad to just leave the people that I only see at school—my school friends, my teachers, [etc.].”
Wambo recently committed to DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, drawn by its academics and top-tier Division III football program.
“We have had strong communication throughout the last year or so,” said Wambo. “They loved my game. They loved my senior film, and the communication was just strong throughout.”
DePauw’s location and opportunities made it stand out from other schools Wambo considered, including North Central and Illinois Wesleyan.
“It’s not too far from home where I would get homesick, but too close from home where I won’t feel independent,” he explained.
Reflecting on his time at Evanston, Wambo highlighted memories both on and off the field. Whether he was in The Evanstonian room working on an article, or out catching touchdowns at Lazier, he cherished his time here.
Looking ahead, Wambo is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of college life.
“I’m excited to see how much I can grow as a student and an athlete,” he said. “It’s a new beginning, and I’m ready for it.”
