Evanston Girls Lacrosse continued their dominant 7-game winning streak on Thursday with a resounding 20-2 victory over Latin. The Wildkits controlled every aspect of the game, overloading the goalie with an endless flurry of shots, and forcing the game to be played almost entirely in Latin’s half.
“We talk every day about the importance of dominating possession,” emphasized Head Coach Sarah McKenna.
The Kits created plenty of chances with this possession in the 1st quarter, but goals were difficult to come by. While Rory Malia and Kathrine Granchalek were able to get a pair of goals, Latin’s goalie Sanya Arora stopped everything else that came her way, even getting a shout-out from the PA at Lazier for her performance.
“Their goalie played a great game,” said McKenna. “We talked about how just a little stick fake was not enough, and we just needed to make her move a little bit more.”
That advice paid off in the 2nd quarter. Malia would start the scoring for Evanston, followed by goals from Bridget Lesch, Megan Hughes, another from Malia, and three more from Granchalek to make it 11-0 and get a running clock going. A couple more goals from Granchelek and Lesch would finish off the quarter, putting the Kits up 13 at the break.
“We saw some really great transitions, and really good feeding across on attack,” said McKenna on the offensive explosion. “We were really good.”
Evanston kept the offense up early in the second half, opening with a pair of goals from Norah Wolf that got the crowd at Lazier howling. Latin would begin to attack a little, scoring a goal to end the shutout. However, the fast-paced offense would return, with goals from Prima Piacenti and Sienna Seyferth—the latter being at the buzzer to put the Kits up 17-1.
The 4th would begin with Latin challenging, and later scoring off a free position shot. However, Evanston would score three more late to seal the deal on a defining victory for this team.
It was a team effort for Evanston, with eight different players scoring on the night.
“Everyone is a threat, and we need to make sure that we’re using all of our team, so it was great to see so many different people score today,” stated McKenna.
