On Tuesday night (10/1), the Kits accomplished two goals by scoring only one: beating the defending state champions, New Trier, and becoming conference champions. This thrilling match against Evanston’s longtime rival resulted in a 1-0 victory, ending New Trier’s two-year winning streak over Evanston. With the victory, the Kits advanced to 13-1-2 and are 4-0-1 in the conference. They are now ranked first in the state after this intense match.
“When you’re coming into this game, you know it’s gonna be a big one,” said senior captain George Lewis.
From the moment the first whistle blew, the Kits understood the assignment: to leave with a win. Although not always pretty, all positions stepped up, especially the defense. New Trier had some early opportunities, including a free kick and a cross that senior Kingston Scrim and goalkeeper Charlie Dillman shut down. After the first 10 minutes, the offensive line began driving balls deep into the opposing team’s half, creating various opportunities and corners. With 8 minutes to go in the half, a ball was deflected from a corner and fell at the feet of senior George Lewis. With a few strides, Lewis ripped a shot from far outside the 18, and with a skim off senior Cristiano Hamer’s head, the Kits scored the first and only goal of the night.
The rest of the game was a battle. The team stayed composed even in times of high stress. A ball was lofted over Evanston’s backline, but New Trier couldn’t capitalize on their one-on-one opportunity against Dillman. When the final whistle blew, the Kits marched off the field with pride, hands in the air and cheers ringing loud. The Kits had finally beaten New Trier.
“We are trying to keep our heads low and just improve every day,” said a humble Lewis after the game.
The Kits are maintaining a humble mentality even after this huge win. Improvement is possible, even for the CSL South champions. This team has and will continue to work every day for that long-desired state championship, and it has never seemed more possible than after this win.
“The Wildkits prevail,” said head coach Franz Calixte. “What could be better than that?”
