Post-football season, pomkits shift focus

With athletics finally returning to normal as cases of COVID-19 dwindle, the Evanston Pomkits are competing once again. Although the lockdown did affect team spirit, with team members unable to participate in real group bonding, there were some opportunities over Zoom.

“[This year], we do a lot of group bonding in person, with games and exercises. It was hard not being able to meet everyone before now,” sophomore and varsity Pomkit grader Kayla Mosco-Flint remarked.

While there were not any in-person competitions last year, there was a virtual meet, where the Pomkits sent in a virtual submission from the ETHS gym.

“We just filmed ourselves in the gym; there wasn’t really any competition buzz that my sister told me about in years prior,” Mosco-Flint reflects.

With the fall football season over, the Pomkits now turn their focus on their upcoming competitions— the most recent one was on Nov. 20 at the Deerfield Warrior Dance Team Invite.

Although the team placed 20th overall, their energy was exciting to watch. The team had performed a dance they only learned a week and a half prior to the competition, so they really had to rigorously practice every day to make sure it was competition ready.

“I thought we did really well for only learning the dance in little over a week before the competition,” Mosco-Flint remarked.

With the next competition not taking place until the beginning of January, at the Central Suburban League hosted by Maine South, the Pomkits are looking forward to bouncing back from their placement on Nov. 20.
