Fencing aims at success with expanded roster

ETHS’ fencing team dealt with issues concerning the number of players on their roster for numerous years, but after rigorous recruiting by the returning fencers, their numbers have risen, and the team has nearly doubled in size.

The addition of nearly 20 members is a huge reason why junior captain Rylie Tiemann believes that this year’s group can be special.

“There are so many more people interested in fencing,” Tiemann said. “Along with the growth, I expect us to do better at tournaments because we have more gear and more coaches.”

Returning members utilized every opportunity to attract new members to the program this off-season.

“I think the biggest factor in our growth was getting the word out and telling people just how cool fencing really is,” Tiemann said. “To prepare for the season we went to the Activities Fair and tried to get as many people interested as possible.”

Although not acknowledged as an official sport, the team certainly trains like one. As well as expanding in number, the team is also looking to expand their training to utilize the new Michael B. Arrington Wellness & Performance Center.

“We have practice every week, and we’re looking to include weight lifting in that training,” Junior Becky Arden explained.

One major positive from the team is how well returning players such as Arden, Tiemann and senior captain Wyatt Hubbard have been able to lead the team

“From coordinating the team in the run-up to our home meet, organizing recruitment at the various activity fairs the school hosts and making sure the newer fencers are where they should be when they should be, the team’s leadership has been invaluable this year,” Smith said.
