After placing thirteenth out of 73 schools at Regionals, Math Team is heading to the ICTM State Meet at University of Illinois today and tomorrow.
“We almost always are in the top ten schools for State,” said Curry. “If we made it to the top five this year, that would be really great, but realistically it’ll be sixth, seventh, or eighth.”
The team will be competing in several events, including written, team, relay, and oral events.
“We try to take about 11 students from each grade level,” said Curry. “We’ve got about 40 to 50 students on Math Team right now.”
“This year, our oralists Justin Liao and Benedict Brady, will probably do well at the written event and the two-person event,” said Curry. “We could place really well in some of the others too, but those will probably be our strongest.”
Liao and Brady, juniors, took second place at regionals in the oral event.
“We’ve actually been doing great this year. We placed seventh in conference, and even beat New Trier and Glenbrook North,” said Curry.
Brady and sophomore Peter Sparks had perfect scores at conference.
“At conference, it was the first time in five years that we won trophy,” said Curry.”
“I think we’ll do pretty well at State,” agreed Sparks, who is in the eight-person event and the written event. “We’ve got a good team this year—a strong division.”
