Holocaust Commemoration ends today with Israeli Fair
To close out Holocaust Remembrance Week, ETHS will hold an Israeli Fair in A241 today.
The Booster Club, the Jewish United Fund, the Jewish Student Union and Shorashim are sponsoring the fair, which will include music, dancing, mystical candle making, and tea in a Bedouin tent.
At lunch, a hummus and falafel lunch with a soft drink can be purchased for $5.
The fair is the culmination of Holocaust Remembrance Week, which started on Tuesday with a speech from author Fern Schumer Chapman and her mother Edith Westerfield Schumer, an immigrant from Nazi Germany. Students also also made presentations, like senior Ruby Macsai-Goren, the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor who visited Auschwitz and shared photographs, junior Sophie Anolick, who told the story of her visit to Majdanek extermination camp in Poland, senior Daniel Antman, who read a story written by his brother. In addition, Ralph Cohn, a Jewish child refugee, told his story of being raised in the Shanghai Ghetto.
“I think it’s important to have this week because students learn about the Holocaust in history lessons, and it’s kind of vague for them, because they don’t see those who experienced the Holocaust,” said Semadar Siegel, Hebrew teacher and Israeli Club sponsor.
